A long-dormant service station on the southern edge of the ACT is set to rise from the ashes, but this time, it's bringing a new era of energy to the region. Prepare for a twist in the tale as we delve into the story of Williamsdale's rebirth!
The Williamsdale site, a ghostly reminder of its former self since 2012, is about to undergo a remarkable transformation. A national fuel retailer, Pearl Energy, has acquired the site, and they're not just bringing pumps - they're bringing a future-proof vision.
The Deal and the Vision
The Suburban Land Agency (SLA) auctioned off Williamsdale Block 1405, a spacious 10,934 sqm plot on the Monaro Highway, to Pearl Energy for a cool $1.22 million. But here's where it gets interesting: the terms of sale mandate that any new petrol station must also provide six high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
The SLA sees this site as a golden opportunity. With its prime location on a major transport route and ample open space, it's perfectly positioned to become a hub for renewable energy infrastructure and regional services.
A Renewable Energy Hub
Sally Gilbert, Acting CEO of the SLA, emphasized the site's potential: "Direct access to the Monaro Highway makes this block a rare find. It's an opportunity to shape the future of infrastructure between Canberra and Cooma, and beyond to the Snowy Mountains."
The site's proximity to a renewable energy precinct is a key factor. It sits next to the impressive 29-hectare Williamsdale Solar Park, with an output of 11.137 MW, and adjacent to that, the grid-scale battery project being developed by Eku Energy in partnership with the ACT Government.
Pearl Energy's Vision
Pearl Energy, a major player with 161 service stations across four states, is partnering with the likes of Mobil Oil, BP Australia, and Ampol. But they're not stopping there. Their website reveals a commitment to environmental sustainability, with plans to utilize solar power at all outlets and introduce "hydrogen cell" technology at selected locations.
The Future of Williamsdale
The SLA plans to follow up the sale with a Development Application, including community consultation. This former service station, once owned by Bob Moore, who operated it until health issues forced its closure in 2012, is now set to become a beacon of renewable energy.
And this is the part most people miss: the potential for a seamless transition from traditional fuel to electric and renewable energy sources. With Pearl Energy's vision and the SLA's support, Williamsdale could become a model for sustainable infrastructure development.
