Victoria Police's Re-Enactment of a Single Gunshot: A Fresh Lead in the Dezi Freeman Manhunt
A single gunshot, heard hours after Dezi Freeman's escape into the Porepunkah bushland, has reignited the search for the alleged police killer. Victoria Police's recent firearms testing near Barrett Lane and Rayner Track in Porepunkah, about 300km northeast of Melbourne, was prompted by reports of a gunshot on August 26 at 11:45 am. This incident occurred just moments after Freeman allegedly opened fire on police, killing two officers and wounding a third.
The police were serving a warrant at Freeman's Porepunkah home when they were confronted at 10:30 am. Despite extensive searches, no trace of Freeman has been found, and he remains at large. The police have received over 1,700 tip-offs and have deployed hundreds of officers and specialist resources, including interstate and international teams.
The search has been scaled back to over 200 police, and Mount Buffalo National Park has reopened to the public. Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush stated that they are considering multiple scenarios, including whether Freeman is still alive, still in the area, or unable to leave and being assisted by others. The police have offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Freeman's capture, the largest in the state's history.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and not approach Freeman, who is considered armed and dangerous. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in tracking a fugitive in remote and dense bushland areas, and the police's efforts to gather evidence and maintain public safety.
