Norway's Military Innovation: The M3 Amphibious Bridge and Ferry System
In a significant military procurement, Norway has ordered the M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system, a groundbreaking technology that promises to revolutionize its military capabilities. On November 28, the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) and GDELS announced a contract worth NOK1.2 billion (USD118 million) for the delivery of the M3 system. The NDMA's Director General, Gro Jære, expressed enthusiasm, stating, 'In collaboration with the supplier and the Swedish Armed Forces, we have secured this contract for the bridge and ferry system for the [Norwegian] Army in record time.'
The M3 system's operational efficiency is remarkable. It can be launched in less than 10 minutes by a small crew of two or three soldiers, making it highly efficient for rapid response missions. Jære further emphasized its versatility, noting that it can transport tanks and heavy vehicles across various water bodies.
GDELS revealed that Norway is the third Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO) member to acquire the M3, following Sweden and Denmark. This brings the total number of users to six, with Germany and the UK also ordering M3s through the Joint Organisation for Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). Latvia, in 2021, ordered four M3s, further highlighting the system's global appeal.
One of the M3's key advantages, according to Jære, is its ability to facilitate joint use with other NATO forces. This promotes cooperation, joint training, and logistics coordination, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of joint operations. The M3's interoperability is a significant factor in its widespread adoption across NATO allies.
