MoMA PS1's 50th Anniversary: Inside the 2026 'Greater New York' Exhibition (2025)

Get ready, art enthusiasts! MoMA PS1 is gearing up for a monumental celebration: its 50th anniversary in 2026! And what better way to mark this milestone than with a sprawling edition of 'Greater New York,' the quinquennial exhibition showcasing the city's vibrant art scene? But this time, there's a twist...

Instead of bringing in outside curators, MoMA PS1 is keeping it in the family. The brilliant curatorial team – led by Director Connie Butler, Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs Ruba Katrib, and Associate Curators Jody Graf and Elena Ketelsen González – will be steering the ship. They'll be supported by Kari Rittenbach (Assistant Curator), Sheldon Gooch (Curatorial Assistant), and Andrea Sánchez (Curatorial Coordinator). This internal approach promises a fresh, intimate perspective on the city's artistic pulse.

"Each iteration of Greater New York is formed in relation to the artists of this city, offering a view into the practices, perspectives, and preoccupations that shape a moment," Katrib explained. "Over the past year, our curatorial team has spent countless hours in studio visits across the five boroughs—an energizing process that has been full of conversations, discoveries, and close-looking.” This dedication to direct engagement with artists is a key element.

And this is the part most people miss... The show, which typically takes over the entire museum, will feature over 50 artists. While the specific theme remains under wraps for now, anticipation is building. Mark your calendars: Greater New York will open its doors on April 16, 2026.

But here's where it gets exciting for art lovers... Next year will be a rare convergence of major art events in New York! The Whitney Biennial will also be opening in the spring, with the New Museum Triennial following shortly after. It's a trifecta of artistic expression that's sure to captivate audiences.

Greater New York, which began in 2000, is a unique event, taking place every five years. The last edition, held in 2020, offered a powerful snapshot of the art world at that moment.

What do you think? Are you excited about the upcoming Greater New York exhibition? Do you think the in-house curatorial approach will bring a unique perspective? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
