Forget towering home runs and chiseled physiques – sometimes, raw power and relentless determination are all it takes to make a statement. That's the story of Marco Dinges, a Brewers prospect who's proving that size doesn't always matter. At a solid 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, he might not immediately turn heads, but his bat tells a different tale.
"His bat speed is off the charts," raves Brenton Del Chiaro, the Brewers' assistant director of player development. "It's one of the best—if not the best—in our organization." And this is the part most people miss: It's that blistering bat speed that allows Dinges to send the ball soaring out of the park, no matter the field.
The Brewers snagged Dinges in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, fresh from Florida State. This 22-year-old right-handed hitter primarily plays catcher, suiting up behind the plate in 47 games during the 2025 season while also serving as a designated hitter in 30 others.
His performance? Simply put, impressive. Dinges slashed .300/.416/.514, blasting 13 home runs across Low-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin. He even joined the elite ranks of minor league catchers, becoming one of only seven to boast an OPS above .900 while accumulating at least 300 at-bats. He batted an even .300 with 13 home runs, 62 runs batted in, and an OPS of .930 in 77 combined games between Class A Carolina and Class High A Wisconsin.
But here's where it gets controversial: A nagging hamstring injury unfortunately sidelined him for a significant portion of the season, and he never fully recovered. This setback led to his early withdrawal from the Arizona Fall League after just two games.
Opposing pitchers quickly learned to fear Dinges' presence at the plate. Del Chiaro reveals that Dinges' bat speed has reached a staggering 85 mph in training, consistently clocking around 75 mph during games – numbers that would be considered major league-caliber.
Dinges himself credits his long-standing approach. "I've always swung pretty violently," he admits. "I was pretty undersized when I went to junior college and I've always had the same swing—I just didn't have the strength. Then once the strength got added, the results started showing." He continues, "I never really struck out that much, so I was like, 'Why not?' That’s how I felt about it.”
Defensively, Dinges showcases a strong arm and impressive athleticism for a catcher. However, he's focusing on honing his game-calling and pitch-framing skills through continued game experience.
