November 18th: A Day of Celebration in Riga
Latvia's Independence Day on November 18th is a significant occasion, and Riga, the capital city, comes alive with a variety of special events and activities. This year, the city marks not only the 107th anniversary of the republic's proclamation but also the 90th anniversary of the iconic Freedom Monument, unveiled on November 18, 1935.
The day begins with an early morning ecumenical church service at the Riga Dome Cathedral at 9:00 a.m., followed by a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument and a special session of the Saeima at noon. The afternoon brings a grand military parade along the River Daugava, adjacent to Riga Castle, which will be live-streamed on LSM.
At 6:00 p.m., a celebration concert will be broadcast live from the Latvian National Theatre, the historic site of the 1918 independence declaration. You can tune in on LTV, LSM, and Latvian Radio 3.
Families are invited to join the festive concert 'Heritage' at Freedom Square, near the monument, at 7:00 p.m. The evening continues with the traditional presidential speech by Edgars Rinkēvičs, followed by the Latvian National Anthem and a captivating laser, sound, and light show, repeating every hour until 11:00 p.m.
Riga's suburbs also host holiday concerts. At 3:00 p.m., the 'Latvian Sound Patterns' concert at the VEF Culture Palace features the Orchestra 'Rīga', soloists Mārcis Auziņš and Kārlis Auziņš, and conductor Valdis Butāns. Simultaneously, the cultural center 'Iļģuciems' presents 'Latvian Classics and the Present Day' with National Opera soloists Inga Šļubovska-Kanceviča and Rihards Mačanovskis.
The cultural palace 'Ziemeļblāzma' hosts 'Rock Symphony for Latvia' at 4:00 p.m., featuring musicians Ēriks Upenieks, Gundars Lintiņš, Miķelis Vītis, singer Juris Vizbulis, dancer Anna Keita Kreicšteinas, and light score by Egīls Kupčis. This concert showcases rock classics and contemporary compositions.
At 5:00 p.m., the 'Culture and Folk Art Center 'Mazā ģilde'' presents 'You are my land. You are my Latvia' with the mixed choir 'Sonore' and the Kuldīga Culture Center chamber choir 'Rāte'. The concert is conducted by Egils Melbārdis, featuring soloist Inese Krūmiņa and instrumentalists Raimonds Kalniņš, Rūdolfs Ozols, Andris Grunte, and composer Valdis Zilveris at the piano.
The cultural center 'Imanta' at 7:00 p.m. hosts 'Inspiration for Latvia' with the 'Mirage Jazz Orchestra', the mixed choir 'Muklājs', and its artistic director Jānis Kokins.
Vagonu Hall offers a musical journey at 21 Vagonu Street, featuring Erna Daugaviete, the Strazdumuiža Club Brass Band, and Imants Daksis with 'Pasaules gaisma'. Tickets are available on ticketshop.lv, while free invitations for concerts at the VEF Culture Palace, 'Iļģuciems', 'Ziemeļblāzma', and 'Imanta' are accessible from November 11 at 10:00 at 'Biļešu paradīze' box offices and bilesuparadize.lv.
The Riga Art Nouveau Center and Concert Hall 'Ave Sol' also host concerts. 'Music for Latvia' is performed at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. by students of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, requiring pre-registration. At 5:00 p.m., 'Forged by Fire' by 'Vilkaci' showcases Latvian folk songs reflecting the nation's lifestyle.
Additionally, the light festival 'Staro Rīga 2025' will illuminate Riga from November 15 to 18, as previously announced.
