A recent power outage affecting CenterPoint Energy customers in the Houston area has left over 20,000 residents without electricity. The majority of outages were concentrated in northern Harris County, particularly in the Spring, Klein, and Tomball neighborhoods. As of 9:55 a.m., approximately 2,900 customers still lacked power.
The impact of the outage was particularly noticeable in Tomball, where Concordia Lutheran High School canceled classes for the day, prioritizing the safety of its students and staff. Three elementary schools and one middle school in the Klein Independent School District (ISD) also experienced power outages, with restoration efforts taking 50 to 90 minutes at different campuses. The Klein ISD worked closely with CenterPoint Energy to expedite the restoration process.
The city of Tomball announced that power had been restored by 9 a.m., and all city facilities, including police dispatch, fire stations, administrative offices, and the community center, had resumed normal operations. However, approximately 370 customers in Montgomery County were still without power, according to Entergy's outage map.
Despite the power outage, the Houston region awoke to a cloudy sky with temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. A ridge of high pressure is expected to move in, bringing decreasing cloud cover and temperatures climbing into the low 50s, which is about 15 degrees below the average of 68 degrees. The situation highlights the importance of reliable power infrastructure in the region.
This incident underscores the need for robust power systems to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. As the situation develops, residents and local authorities will continue to work together to restore power and address any ongoing challenges.
