A brand-new sports haven has just sprung up in Hexham, promising a vibrant space for everyone!
On December 15, 2025, at 10:43 am, the community of Hexham welcomed a fantastic new sports facility, designed to get both adults and children moving and grooving. It's a game-changer, and here's why...
This isn't just any sports center; it's the 'PlayZone,' an all-weather marvel equipped with fencing and floodlights. This means safe, outdoor fun is on the menu all year round! Located conveniently on land next to the Priory School on Corbridge Road, the PlayZone is a strategic addition to the community. During school hours, the students will have exclusive access, but evenings, weekends, and school holidays open up the space for the entire community to enjoy.
The project was a collaborative effort, with Northumberland County Council working hand-in-hand with the local community to bring the PlayZone to life. Hexham Priory School, in partnership with Hexham Town Council, will be managing the facility. Want to book the space or get involved? Contact the Priory School office at 01434 506021.
But wait, there's more! This PlayZone is part of a larger initiative. It's the eighth such facility constructed by Northumberland County Council, joining others already thriving in Alnwick, Amble, Ashington, Bedlington, West Wylam, Newbiggin, and Choppington. The project received funding from the Premier League, The FA, the Government’s Football Foundation, Northumberland County Council, and community contributions. The goal? To create outdoor spaces that encourage residents to be more active.
Northumberland County Council chipped in over £67,000 towards the total £269,000 Hexham scheme.
Councillor Wendy Pattison, a cabinet member for Culture, Leisure, and Tourism, shared her enthusiasm: “The county council has been busy constructing a number of PlayZones across Northumberland to help more people of all ages to become active in their own community. Some have already opened, and they are proving really popular, offering a great place for family and friends to meet, to be active and have fun, which is so good for everyone’s mental and physical health.”
Ward Councillor and Hexham Town Councillor, Suzanne Fairless-Aitken, added: “This PlayZone is fantastic community facility, especially for those living in the east end of the town. It is already being well used by the local residents and school pupils. It is versatile and can be used for most popular sports and activities including football, netball, basketball and fitness.”
Louise Burns, Head Teacher at Hexham Priory, expressed her gratitude: “Hexham Priory School is incredibly grateful for the support from the Football Foundation, the Northumberland County Council and Hexham Town Council in developing this amazing facility for both our school and the local community."
