Elon Phoenix Achieves Dual No-Hitters, Drawing National Attention
Both Elon University’s baseball and softball teams delivered no-hitters on the same day—Saturday, February 28—and the feat drew coverage from the Associated Press, The Washington Post, and MLB.com.
In a rarely seen turn of events, Elon’s baseball and softball squads each pitched a no-hitter on the same calendar day. The Associated Press highlighted the accomplishment, with additional coverage from The Washington Post and MLB.com.
“I spent most of my college days as a pitcher, so I truly appreciate the effort involved,” Elon’s Director of Athletics Jennifer Strawley told the AP. “Perfect games and no-hitters aren’t everyday occurrences, and achieving both on one day underscores the importance of teamwork. Behind every stellar pitching moment are plays and decisions from teammates that make that moment possible.”
On the softball side, Anna Dew hurled a six-inning perfect game against Charleston Southern, marking Elon’s first perfect game since 2022. Meanwhile, Elon’s baseball rotation—Aidan Stieglitz, Mike Staiano, and RJ Latkowski—combined to throw a no-hitter against Fairfield.
Dew’s perfect performance, a historic milestone for Elon softball, complemented the baseball squad’s collective no-hitter effort on the same day, amplifying the day’s visibility for the program.
“We’re celebrating a truly special moment for our student-athletes, coaches, and the Elon community,” Strawley added. “Having two extraordinary performances on a single day, and the ensuing attention, is meaningful for everyone involved.”
Thought-provoking takeaway: When multiple teams within a single university excel simultaneously, it not only showcases depth across programs but also magnifies institutional pride in ways that extend beyond the field. Do you see this kind of cross-team achievement as a blueprint for building broader athletic culture at universities? Would you argue that such moments matter more for publicity or for long-term program development?
