A young man's inspiring journey: from a brain tumour to a master's degree.
A football-loving student's life took an unexpected turn.
Ekam Dhaliwal, a 19-year-old sports science student at Coventry University, was living his best life in 2022. Little did he know that a simple feeling of dizziness would lead to a life-altering diagnosis.
After experiencing some dizziness, Ekam was initially told it was vertigo. However, his instinct told him to get some tests done. A decision that would change his life forever.
The day after an MRI, he received a phone call that changed everything. He was instructed to go to the hospital immediately. Upon arrival, a doctor delivered the news: he had a brain tumour, and it was serious.
"That's when reality hit," Ekam recalled. "I had this invincible mindset, thinking nothing could touch me. But here's where it gets controversial... even the fittest and most athletic individuals aren't immune to such diagnoses."
Ekam's tumour, a rare benign ependymoma, required immediate attention. He underwent a series of operations at a hospital in Oxford.
The first operation focused on managing the fluid flow in his brain. Despite the procedure, Ekam's spirit remained unwavering. He even attended football matches, though he could only play for a few minutes.
But the second operation, aimed at removing the tumour, left him unable to walk or talk. It was a challenging time, and Ekam's family played a crucial role in his recovery.
"My parents were incredible. They pushed me to regain my independence. It took about six weeks of intense therapy and support to get me back to a basic level of communication."
And this is the part most people miss: the long-term effects of such an experience. Ekam's coordination and balance were affected, making it difficult for him to return to his beloved sport.
"I've found the gym to be a great help. It's a way for me to stay fit and active, even if I can't play football like before."
Despite these challenges, Ekam's determination shines through. He recently supported the BBC CWR's Children in Need challenge, offering therapy and encouragement. "It's a great cause, and if I can make an impact, I'm happy to do so."
Ekam is back at university, and his motivation is clear. "I want to help people. I've been through a lot, and I want to give back."
His future goals include pursuing a master's in physiotherapy, with a focus on neurological physiotherapy. "I want to make a difference, and this is my way of doing it."
