Courageous Journalism: Migrant Abuses in Mexico and Indigenous Attacks in Peru Win Global Awards (2026)

Powerful journalism is once again proving that truth can emerge even from the most dangerous corners of the world. Two groundbreaking investigations from Mexico and Peru have taken home top honors at the Global Shining Light Awards (GSLA) during the 14th Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC25) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

These awards celebrate fearless investigative reporting conducted in developing or transitional nations, often under threat, censorship, or extreme risk. Open to stories released between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024, this year’s competition drew an extraordinary 410 entries from 97 countries—proof that courageous journalism is alive and thriving, despite global pressure on press freedom.

The winning investigations from Latin America tell stories that many might wish to silence. From Mexico came Tráileres, Trampa Para Migrantes (Cargo Trailers: Trap for Migrants), an exposé by Noticias Telemundo and the Latin American Center for Investigative Journalism (El CLIP). This cross-border project, developed with collaborators such as the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Bellingcat, Pie de Página, Chiapas Paralelo, En un 2×3 Tamaulipas, Plaza Pública, and Contracorriente, uncovered shocking details about how migrants are smuggled and exploited inside cargo trailers bound for the U.S.—raising disturbing questions about who truly profits from human desperation.

Peru’s winning piece, Los Vuelos de la Muerte: Líderes Indígenas Asesinados en un Territorio Invadido por 67 Narcopistas (Death Flights: Indigenous Leaders Murdered in a Territory Invaded by 67 Narco Airstrips), was published by Mongabay Latam and Earth Genome. This deeply reported story revealed how organized crime and illegal airstrips are destroying Indigenous territories in the Amazon—and how community leaders are paying with their lives for defending their ancestral land. But here’s where the story turns even darker: could the global drug trade’s environmental devastation be the next frontier in investigative journalism?

The 2025 GSLA winners stand alongside other bold investigations covering Russian recruitment of foreign fighters, violence against Indigenous peoples, and the spread of manipulative cult movements in Africa—each one a stark reminder of the power and peril of investigative work.

And this is the part many overlook: these journalists are not just reporting stories—they’re risking everything to expose them. Their achievements fuel a larger debate about global accountability and the price of truth. Should international institutions do more to protect journalists under threat? Or does the responsibility rest within the countries themselves to change the conditions that make such risks inevitable?

What do you think—can journalism still serve as a shield for the vulnerable, or has it become a battleground for power and control? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the conversation about the future of fearless reporting.
