Capitals to Call Up Ilya Protas? Carbery on the Young Star's Future (2026)

Is Ilya Protas, the young star, ready to light up the NHL? The Washington Capitals are facing a center-ice crisis, and all eyes are on Ilya Protas, a rising star in their minor league system. But will he get the call-up?

This 19-year-old Belarusian player is making waves with the Hershey Bears, showcasing exceptional talent in his rookie season in the American Hockey League (AHL). He's on a scorching six-game goal-scoring streak, leading the Bears in both goals and points. It's a performance even he didn't anticipate!

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery has been closely monitoring Protas. When asked if a call-up was in the cards, Carbery responded, “The time will come.” He emphasized that the team is consistently assessing Protas's progress, watching game footage, and gathering feedback. Carbery acknowledged that Protas is performing exceptionally well.

Protas is developing and working on his game in the AHL. The coach added, the organization is excited about Protas's development, and the next question is, 'When can he come up here and do those same types of things?'

Protas, a year younger than most pros, has earned significant responsibility from the Bears' coaching staff. He's a key player in the top six, playing in all situations, including power plays and penalty kills. His performance has been impressive, with 16 points (8 goals, 8 assists) in his first 17 games.

Meanwhile, the Capitals are dealing with injuries to veteran centers Nic Dowd and Pierre-Luc Dubois. Dubois will be out for most of the season after surgery, and Dowd has missed several games. This has led to younger players like Justin Sourdif, Connor McMichael, and Hendrix Lapierre stepping up in the bottom center positions.

The Capitals recently placed Nic Dowd on injured reserve and called up winger Bogdan Trineyev from the Bears. Trineyev had been playing on Protas's line.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Carbery noted that Trineyev has been playing well in Hershey, but the team is allowing Miro to continue playing, not taking anything away from Bogdan.

What do you think? Should the Capitals bring up Protas now to help address their center depth issues, or should they let him continue to develop in the AHL? Is it too early, or is he ready for the NHL spotlight? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
