Rebecca Hughes, an interior designer with a keen eye for detail, has transformed a quiet Norfolk home into a characterful country retreat. Her design philosophy revolves around creating a sense of discovery and a seamless blend between the house and its natural surroundings. The project, Old Oaks Hall, was a collaboration with an entrepreneurial couple who envisioned a warm and inviting space for their family and guests. The house, with its exposed 18th-century timber beams and traditional sash windows, already had a strong architectural foundation.
A Restrained Palette and Unexpected Patterns
Hughes' design approach is characterized by a restrained color palette, featuring serene neutrals, earthy greens, and soft blues. This palette draws inspiration from the countryside and evokes a sense of calm. She contrasts this with richly layered fabrics, natural wood, and heritage details, such as Oak furniture and wool, adding a touch of warmth and natural tactility. The use of textural surfaces, like Tadelakt and Zellige tiles, further enhances the artisanal charm of the space.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Hughes' design is her use of unexpected patterns. She introduces outdoor fabrics indoors, creating a robust yet textured atmosphere. She also convinced the owners to embrace pattern in the kitchen with a patterned sofa and in the dining room with a full wraparound wallpaper. These choices add a layer of visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Tonal Layering and Emotional Connection
The heart of Hughes' design lies in the tonal layering, achieved through a mix of pattern, fabric, and provenance. She carefully selects design elements, including Visual Comfort pendant lights, antique pieces, Lewis & Wood wallpapers, Guy Goodfellow fabrics, and works by local artists. This approach not only creates a cohesive aesthetic but also fosters an emotional connection with the clients, as she takes them to the artists' studios to help them discover their own style.
The Children's Bunk Room: A Whimsical Space
The children's bunk room is a standout feature of the project. Hughes transformed a simple pitched room into a whimsical space with a secret den area. She designed the bunk beds to have a little loft in the eaves, creating a magical and practical space. The room is adorned with bespoke window treatments, including plug cushions and wraparound blackout curtains, adding to the overall charm.
The Future of Old Oaks Hall
The project is not yet complete. Hughes is currently converting the estate's listed former livestock barn into a cool but glorified pub, combining a tech-filled games room, an outdoor kitchen, and a multifunctional living space. She also plans to refresh the pool house and assist with another property opposite Old Oaks Hall. Her work has successfully brought the owners closer to their new life, and she believes that her design has achieved its intended purpose.
